Awards at the FCCPA Cermony

October 29, 2009

Awards at FCCAP I have always had that mentality that I’d never win anything in my entire life. Getting not just one but three awards in 1st place really came as a surprise to me.  I’m honored to know that my work got quite a bit of recognition, and it’s all thanks to Falcon Times.  I joined the club to contribute my work, collaborate ideas with the staff and to compete with who or whatever I could consider competition.  While I’m nowhere near as good as I intend to be, winning these awards further  motivates me to set the bar alot higher to reach that potential.  It’s a good feeling and that motivation will burn within me for a long time. People may not see it, but it’s there.

The Awards are: Best Illustration, Best Editorial Cartoon Best, Comic Strip, and Inner Circle of Excellence

The awards resulted from a series of illustrations I call the TEE, as in The Edited Editorial.  They are a series of stand alone illustrations that centers on the concept of politics, or school related events.  The style of the black and white ones were inspired by Jim Morin, a cartoonist at the Miami Herald.  Drawing from this perspective made me respect cartoonist like him that actually have to come up with an idea every day.  The awarded drawings are as listed below.

This Illustration did not need a name or even had one.  I collaborated this idea with the Entertainment Editor, Daniel Masip after I requested some ideas to fill in the blanks(the words on the papers).  In the end, it came out pretty good.

State vs Community

This was an idea given to me by the adviser of the Falcon Times, Monolo Barco.   Personal or not, this captured the reality of the community college system.  I collaborated with my sister to get it colored.

Journalism is Dead

The idea was already in my head WAY before I was requested to.  In fact, during conferences that took place in New York, several speakers were weighing down the idea that journalism was dead.  I’m not a Journalist for say, but I really coped for the ones that felt irritated by the myth that journalism was slowly dying.  And this was from the people they are supposed to be admiring; Journalist that worked in the industry for years.  I understood that the push for digital media was necessary, but forgetting about print altogether? The rest of my thoughts is further expressed in this image.  No need for more words. I’m really proud to see that this illustration pulled through for 1st place.  Thanks to Laura C.Morel for giving me the initiative to do it.
